Literally right next door to our hotel in Santa Cruz was the Saturn Café. We had noticed it as we drove in and saw that it was 100% Vegetarian, so
I did a quick internet search to see how it was rated. The reviews were OK, and
the menu looked decent enough so we decided to eat breakfast there before we
headed out of town the next day.
The Saturn Café has been around since 1979 and is Vegetarian with Vegan
and Gluten Free options!
The super-cheesy space theme décor gives the 50’s style booths and
tables a real kitsch factor. They have a large pink refrigerator at the hostess
stand as you walk in where they keep the menus,
and instead of Men’s and Women’s restrooms you can choose between Robots
and Aliens.
(I chose Robots)
As for the Food, they offer a variety of Breakfasts, Burgers
and Sandwiches (many of them using soy-based Chicken and Bacon to keep it
Vegetarian).
My friend wanted Breakfast and decided on the Huevos Y Papas
Burrito (Scrambled Organic Eggs, Soyrizo, Home Fries, Jack and Cheddar Cheese
served with Sour Cream, Guacamole and Fresh salsa $7.50). He seemed to like it
well enough and ate most of it.
I was more in the mood to try one of their Veggie Burgers so I ordered
the Space Cowboy (Saturn Patty with Fakin’ Bacon, Onion Strings, Cheddar Cheese
and BBQ Sauce, topped with Lettuce and Tomato $10.99). This also came with a
side item and I got the Cream of Tomato Soup.
The Burger patty itself was made in-house and was actually
not bad (Veggie Burgers can often be extremely bland), but it was the
combination of the Fakin’ Bacon, Cheese, BBQ Sauce and the super-crispy Onion
Strings that made the overall flavor of the Burger good. The Lettuce and Tomato
were also really fresh and the Bun was pretty good too. The Tomato Soup was
also quite nice and I was pleased that I selected it as my side.
All in all, for a Vegetarian restaurant I thought that Saturn Café was
pretty good. The silly décor was amusing, but it was the Food that sealed the
deal, making it a memorable experience.
